PAWS, Shawnee, Sioux, and Our New Friends

Kathi McMahon

It seems like Fall brings lots of events for the minis. School is back in session. The holidays are around the corner. People want to get in one more visit with the minis before they take most of the winter off. They will still do a holiday party here or there. Of course we do Salvation Army Bell Ringing. But mostly when they get their winter woolies it is time to rest. They get too dirty to clean. It is too cold to bathe them. AND it doesn't seem very fair to make them go into warm buildings when they are only going to have to go back outside again. This year we are going to be a part of the holiday light tour...so stay tuned for more on that.

This week we went to the Make Time to PAWS event at the University of Minnesota. PAWS is Pet Away Worries and Stress. There are sessions at all of the campuses at the U of M. But this is the BIG event at Coffman Union. There are rabbits, dogs, cats, a chicken, and of course the minis! Students say things like "my heart feels better now" or "I miss my pet and this makes me feel less homesick." It's a great program!!

Shawnee took her first elevator ride in the parking ramp. She did great! They made the cutest little stall for us to stand in out of pallets. It was really cute and helped with crowd control. YES...there is a line up to visit with the minis!! My friend Shelley brings her minis in when our shift is over.

Then we traveled to one of my favorite lady and mini horse mentor's house to pick up a sweet little mare named Sioux. She will make her home in Marine on the St Croix at a farm that is partnering with This Little Horse to provide another home for the minis we work with. I have fallen in love with their full size horses Cricket and Feather....and the humans are pretty great too!!

Today we went and picked up three of the minis that were temporarily at Wishbone Ranch. They were rescues that will also be staying in Marine. One is named Carmen. She is the hat model for a This Old Horse/This Little Horse fundraiser. Then we have Candace and Darla. What a beautiful sight to see them running through the pasture together.
